Hydraulics, Pneumatics and Controls

For engineers, automation technicians, toolmakers, apprentices, maintenance personnel, setup personnel

Instruction is divided between hydraulic and pneumatic controls and system design. Hands-on operation and troubleshooting of training equipment is used to illustrate fluid properties, pressure and pipe friction. Actual components used includes pumps, reservoirs and accumulators, actuators, control valves, packing and seals, compressors, and electrical controls. The course targets those who build or maintain fluid power systems, automation systems and process control systems.

Time Commitment: 64 hours over 16 meetings (at Oakton Community College) / Cost: $450

Programmable Controllers (PLC)

For engineers, automation technicians, toolmakers, apprentices, maintenance personnel, production technicians

This course teaches the fundamentals of programmable logic controllers (PLC) systems. Subjects include control system power distribution wiring, sensors and air valve interfaces, discrete I/O interface circuits, flow charting and state diagrams of machine sequences, ladder logic programming, machine diagnostic programming and HMI display programming. Labs are taught using the Allen Bradley SLC-500 controllers. HMI displays used are Allen Bradley’s Panel View 600 series terminals. All programs are written using RSLogix 500 software.

Time Commitment: 80 hours over 16 meetings (at Oakton Community College) / Cost: $575
